Quartz Retarders: low order

The retarders are single plates with a path difference between the principal polarization axes equal to the desired wavelength fraction added with an integer multiple of the specified design wavelength λ. The integer part k (order number) is chosen to yield a mechanical thickness of about 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm. The resulting order numbers are k≥5 at λ=250 nm and k≤2 atλ=1000 nm.
The wavefront distortion is λ/10 (at λ = 550 nm) and the wedge error is smaller than 2’’. The accuracy of the path difference is ± 3 nm.
The spectral transmission range of quartz is 180 nm - 2.7 µm. The usable spectral range for a single low-order plate is much smaller and depends on the required accuracy of the retardation as well as on the possible order number k. At λ=633nm (k=2) wavelength changes of about ±1 nm will cause a deviation of the path difference smaller than the production tolerance of ±3 nm. At λ=355 nm (k=4) a wavelength change of only 0.5 nm will result in the same deviation. Although a deviation of the path difference which is much larger than the production tolerance is acceptable in may applications we recommend the use of zero order plates for wavelengths below 350 nm. Nevertheless, we will deliver low-order plates for short wavelengths on request. Below 230 nm these plates will be manufactured from synthetic quartz crystal.
Owing to the small thickness of our low-order plates, the path difference of the plate is neither very dependent on temperature nor on the aperture angle of the incident beam of light. The deviation ΔR of the path difference from the nominal value R (both in nm) due to a temperature change by ΔT (in K) or due to tilt by Δφ (in degrees) can be estimated as follows:

ΔR≈-(0,1 nm/K)•ΔT
ΔR≈±(0,1 nm/Grad²)•Δφ²

The deviations will be smaller than the production tolerance for a temperature change up to ±30 K or for a tilt up to ±5.5°.
The plates are AR coated with double layers at the design wavelength (R<0.1% per surface) and are delivered with a cylindrical mount made of anodized aluminum and engraved with the direction of the fast axis, the path difference and the design wavelength.
