Quartz Retarders: Zero Order

These retarders consist of two crystal plates cut parallel to their optical axis. The Plates are assembled with crossed crystal axes. As a result, the path difference between the two polarization axes is determined by the difference of the thickness of the two plates. By this method almost any desired path difference can be obtained (usually λ/2 or λ/4 at the design wavelength).
The thickness of each plate is about 0.8 mm (total thickness approx. 1.6 mm). The wavefront distortion is λ/10 (at λ = 550 nm) and the wedge error is smaller than 2’’. The accuracy of the path difference is ± 2 nm.
The spectral transmission range for quartz is 180 nm to 2.7 µm. For wavelengths below 230 nm the plates are manufactured from synthetic crystal quartz. The usable spectral range for a single zero-order plate is much smaller than the transmission range and depends on the required accuracy of the retardation. For a simple estimation of the useable wavelength range one assumes the path difference (in nm) to be independent of the wavelength (i.e. the dispersion is neglected). As an example a λ/2 plate designed for 633 nm has a path difference of 316.5 nm. If this plate is used at 532 nm this path difference corresponds to 0.6•λ. For wavelength changes of up to ±4 nm (λ/2 plates) or up to ±8 nm (λ/4 plates) the resulting error will be smaller than the production tolerance of ±2 nm. Please take into account that the required accuracy of the path difference is lower in many applications which results in a correspondingly broader spectral range.
Deviations of the path difference also occur due to temperature change or non-normal incidence. The path difference for zero order plates is less temperature sensitive but more tilt sensitive than for low order plates. The deviation ΔR of the path difference from the nominal value R (both in nm) due to a temperature change by ΔT (in K) or due to tilt by Δφ (in degrees) can be estimated as follows:

ΔR≈-(8•10-5K-1)•R•ΔT
ΔR≈±(1 nm/Grad²)•Δφ²

For λ/2 plate at 633 nm the deviations will be smaller than the production tolerance for a temperature change up to ±80 K order for tilt angles up to ±1.5°.
The plates are AR coated with double layers at the design wavelength (R<0.1% per surface) and are delivered with a cylindrical mount made of anodized aluminum and engraved with the direction of the fast axis, the path difference and the design wavelength.
Zero order retarders are available either joined by optical contact (cementless) or with air space between the plates (version L). The air spaced version is particularly suited for high power lasers and for applications with strong thermal or mechanical load.
